Marty’s Sunday Morning Forecast – Variety! – 5/2/2021

Overview:  We’re tracking colder air, thunderstorms, rain and snow!

Today:  Breezy and cooler with increasing clouds and afternoon showers and thunderstorms becoming likely around primarily the Pikes Peak Region. High temperatures should reach the 60s and 70s north of highway 50, with 80s along and/or south of the Arkansas River. The air will warm into the 50s and 60s over the mountains before showers develop and start helping to cool the air again. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms may begin to spread south late this afternoon, and a couple could be strong to severe from about Colorado Springs northward with hail to an inch in diameter and thunderstorm wind gusts to 60 mph the most likely severe weather threats.

Tonight:  Scattered evening showers and thunderstorms are expected before a more widespread area of rain and snow develops and spreads southward after midnight. We do expect wet snow to fall over the higher terrain around the Pikes Peak Region, and possibly even over Colorado Springs, but accumulating snow is more likely on the cooler surfaces on the Palmer Divide and Teller County. By morning the air will have cooled into the 20s and 30s on the higher terrain with 40s over the plains.

Extended:  Much colder Monday with areas of rain over the plains, and some wet snow at times over the mountains and the Palmer Divide. The more widespread precipitation looks to remain focused along and west of I-25 but scattered showers are also possible farther east. Several inches of wet snow could accumulate over our local mountain communities and the Palmer Divide through Monday morning, mainly on the cooler surfaces, and the higher you live the more likely accumulating snow will be heavier. Although some wet snow could also be seen around Colorado Springs it doesn’t appear likely there would be significant impacts to travel besides reduced visibility and wet roadways. Spotty showers and possibly some thunderstorms are also possible Tuesday & Wednesday as the air slowly warms, but we don’t expect much rain. Drier and warmer weather is expected Thursday through Saturday.
