Marty’s Saturday Morning Forecast – Breezy & Warmer – 4/24/2021

Overview:  A period of warm, windy weather will bring fire weather concerns to the area through Monday. Windy & colder with a chance for rain and snow Tuesday and Wednesday, then warmer again.

Today:  Mostly sunny this morning, then partly cloudy, breezy, and warmer this afternoon with high temperatures reaching the 60s and 70s for the plains with 50s and 60s for our local mountain communities and the southern high valleys. The wind will be strongest south of the Arkansas River this afternoon where wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph will cause conditions to become favorable for the spread of wildfires, so Fire weather warnings are in effect this afternoon.

Tonight:  Expect decreasing clouds and wind, though at times it’ll likely remain breezy in pocket over the mountains and Raton Mesa, as well as the far eastern plains. Not as cool with low temperatures mainly in the 40s, but the high country will be cooler.

Sunday:  Mostly sunny, becoming breezy to windy at times and warmer again with high temperatures in the 70s and 80s for the plains, 60s for the mountains. Fire Weather Watches are in place for many areas for Sunday afternoon.

Extended:  Monday looks windy and warm again with more fire weather concerns likely. Turning sharply colder and still windy on Tuesday with areas of rain and snow developing. Rain is expected over most of the plains, but on the higher terrain along and west of I-25 some wet snow is also likely to fall, but impacts to travel, if they occur, would likely be confined to mainly mountain communities or possibly briefly on the highest elevations along the Palmer Divide. Wednesday looks cool and unsettled with scattered rain showers possible over the plains and a mixture of spotty rain and snow showers over the mountains. We expect a nice warming trend as we approach next weekend with breezy afternoons and passing mountain wave clouds.
