Wildfire in Bent County burning near John Martin Reservoir 50% contained

BENT COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A wildfire is burning in Bent County near the John Martin Reservoir Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Bent County Sheriff's Office, the fire is in the area of County Road 17.5 and County Road JJ.

The fire was first reported at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday. Eight fire agencies, three airplanes, and one helicopter were called in to assist.

No structures are threatened by the fire.

As of 5:10 p.m., the fire is 50% contained and has burned roughly 1,400 acres.

A portion of Highway 50 was closed between Las Animas and Lamar because of the smoke around 4 p.m. The BCSO said the road is expected to reopen soon.

The cause is still under investigation.

Residents are asked to stay clear of the area.
