Crews called to wildfire burning near Gold Camp Road
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A wildfire sparked in Cheyenne Canon Monday afternoon, and crews were called to the area near Gold Camp Road.
Colorado Springs Police confirmed that multiple calls had been received about smoke coming from the canyon area at around 2:15 p.m. Our tower camera from Cheyenne Mountain saw a small amount of smoke. A helicopter crew reported seeing the fire in a gulley, according to emergency dispatch communications.
Capt. Mike Smaldino with CSFD said the fire was in a hard-to-reach area, but it had burned less than an acre. The fire was about 1/4 to 1/2 an acre in size but no evacuations were in place. No campgrounds or any homes or structures were in the area.
Smaldino said the fire appeared to be slow-moving and was "kind of staying in place." Multiple helicopters were called to airdrop fire retardant.
CSFD said the fire is burning on United States Forest Service land. There's no estimated cause of the fire at this time.
