CDOT urges drivers to use caution ahead of weekend winter conditions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The Colorado Department of Transportation advised travelers to use caution and plan ahead prior to the winter storm expected over the weekend.

On Friday morning, travelers experienced strong wind gusts and hazardous driving conditions in the high country.

CDOT says motorists should prepare for snow-packed and icy conditions. Motorists can also expect snow in the Denver metro area on Sunday, with moderate impacts. 

Avalanche mitigation operations may take place on several passes across the state throughout the weekend, which could cause road closures. For a CDOT map showing avalanche work click here.

According to CDOT, drivers should expect heavier traffic along the I-70 Mountain Corridor starting on Friday, and should prepare for Chain and Traction Laws.

May sure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit, which should include:

-Chains/Alternative traction devices

-Water

-Sand/Cat litter

-Flares

-Jumper cables

-Blankets
