Colorado Springs officials discuss Fourth of July fireworks cancellations

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs Fire Department announces that all permitted fireworks displays scheduled for July 4 in the city have been canceled due to extreme fire danger.

During a press conference, Fire Marshal Kris Cooper reminded community members that fireworks are not allowed in city limits and that police will be patrolling the city on the Fourth of July.

The department released the following statement:

Due to extreme fire danger, critically dry vegetation, and multiple large wildfires burning across Colorado, all permitted Independence Day fireworks displays in Colorado Springs have been canceled.

This decision was made after careful evaluation by Mayor Yemi Mobolade, the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and our public safety partners. Current fuel moisture levels in Colorado Springs are comparable to those recorded before the Waldo Canyon Fire, creating an extreme wildfire risk for our community.

We know this is disappointing, especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States and Colorado's 150th birthday. We share that disappointment. But protecting our community, our firefighters, and our first responders has to come first. Our hope is to celebrate together when conditions are safe to do so.

Thank you to our community and to our partners, including Sports Corp, for understanding and supporting this decision. Your commitment to keeping Colorado Springs safe means everything.
