Costco in Colorado Springs caught in diesel and gas mix-up affecting hundreds of drivers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Costco gas station on Barnes Road has been confirmed as one of the locations affected by a gas and diesel mix-up from Jan. 7 in the afternoon to Jan. 8 in the morning that has impacted hundreds of drivers across Colorado.

The Division of Oil and Public Safety (OPS) says it has received over 600 complaints from drivers, and inspectors have confirmed the presence of diesel in nearly 50 unleaded holding tanks at gas stations across the state. It comes after one of Colorado's largest fuel distributors, HF Sinclair, somehow caused the diesel mix to be put into pumps across the state.

If you were affected by contaminated fuel, officials say the damage would be known pretty quickly after putting fuel in, with your car shutting off and likely not restarting.

Now, if you fill up your tank at the Costco on Barnes Road, you should be fine. The state says that they’ve since cleared out all of this diesel mix.

The Division of Oil and Public Safety encourages those who believe they were affected by the mix-up to call 303-866-4967. OPS also asks drivers to fill out this consumer complaint form.

Officials also urge affected drivers to return to the Costco on Barnes Road to file a claim there. They say if you have your receipt, hold onto it to help prove you were affected during the period when drivers received the contaminated fuel. OPS says Costco will send the claim up the ladder to HF Sinclair, who will ultimately be responsible for paying for the damages. The state also says it's not a bad idea to loop your insurance in, too.

KRDO13 asked Costco about the claims process and any guidance they could give for impacted drivers. As of Wednesday evening, the warehouse club has yet to respond.

An investigation into what caused this is underway with answers from HF Sinclair expected in the next 2 to 3 weeks.
