Venetucci Boulevard in south Colorado Springs finally getting much-needed road repairs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The city is giving attention to a long-neglected road that is bordered by four different jurisdictions and has drawn many driver complaints.

A city public works crew recently performed some repaving on sections of Venetucci Boulevard, from just south of the Broadmoor World Arena to the intersection of B Street and Highway 85/87.

The affected road has been among the most frequent sources of complaints from viewers to KRDO13's The Road Warrior since coverage began eight months ago.

Drivers have complained about vehicle damage from potholes, crumbling pavement, broken curbs, and unpaved road shoulders and no one's sure how long it's been since any significant repairs were done there.

The southern end of the paving is approximately 100 feet from the intersection, which is the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT) jurisdiction because it connects to the Highway 85/87 bridge over Interstate 25.

Also connected to the intersection are B Street (El Paso County jurisdiction) and the south end of Venetucci to the Walmart shopping center (Fountain jurisdiction).

"Anytime we get into those areas where you've got intermingling of city, county, and state infrastructure, it gets a little muddy on where do you start and where do you stop," said Corey Farkas, the city's public works operations and maintenance manager. "And so, so we worked hard."

He explained that technology is making it easier to resolve such issues.

"We work with our asset management team," Farkas said. "This is one of those areas that's been kind of a 'no man's land' for quite a while. So, that area is our responsibility and we'll be taking care of it. We'll fill potholes and do some short-term paving, and try to identify a future improvement project for that area."

Venetucci is a heavily traveled road because of its proximity to Highway 85/87, I-25, Fort Carson, and the Walmart shopping center.

While surveying the area Tuesday, The Road Warrior also found some damage on the county's side of the intersection and informed officials.
