CDOT to start ten-mile maintenance paving project next week on Interstate 25 through Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The peak of the road construction in southern Colorado has arrived with warmer spring temperatures and a major repaving project on I-25 through the Steel City.

Officially beginning Monday, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will repave ten miles of the freeway between the Eagleridge Boulevard exit on the north end, south to the Stem Beach Road exit.

"We're going to resurface the asphalt pavement, do some guardrail, signage and striping improvements, along with some concrete panel replacements of I-25 mainline near the 50/47 interchange," said CDOT engineer Patrick Vigil.

He added that paving work will happen only at night to reduce traffic impacts from necessary lane closures.

The $16 million project is scheduled for completion this fall.

"It is a much-needed area," Vigil said. "What's going to be great about this project is we're going to provide a smoother roadway surface for those who will be traveling through our town, and also it'll be a lot safer for people -- with the upgrade of the guardrails, the signage and the striping improvements."

It'll be the biggest construction project along I-25 in the Home of Heroes since the $23 million Ilex project in 2016-2017 that widened the freeway between downtown and the Arkansas River, smoothed out a dangerous curve and replaced or upgraded several bridges.

Also scheduled for this summer is a $23 million project to repave 11 miles of I-25 south of Pueblo, between the Colorado City/Rye exit and the Huerfano County line.
