More surveillance cameras coming to Pueblo Riverwalk next spring
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- An increase in vandalism and other minor crimes has led officials of the popular Arkansas Riverwalk to take steps to improve safety and security.
Officials said that they plan to spend $150,000 to install more surveillance cameras along the Riverwalk that can record in high definition and discourage illegal or undesirable activity, while making it easier for police to identify and arrest suspects.
The money will come from the Riverwalk's budget and from federal money provided by the American Rescue Plan Act.
El Paso County Commissioner Chris Wiseman said that he believes despite the concerns, the Riverwalk remains one of the city's safest areas.
"These new cameras will only enhance that," he said.
The cameras should be installed and operational next spring.
Thursday marks the Riverwalk's 22nd anniversary.
In another upcoming change on the Riverwalk, officials hope to get funding from Pueblo County commissioners before the end of the year to finance an $11 million extension of the walkway's east end, on Richmond Avenue, to nearby Santa Fe Avenue.
Once completed, the Riverwalk will be visible from Interstate 25 and open the way for possible future extensions to Runyon Lake.
