Weekend special events to impact streets, parks, and trails

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pikes Peak APEX and Sam Guadagnoli Festival of Life is kicking off this weekend across Colorado Springs. Multiple locations are expected to be impacted due to these special events.
The Pikes Peak APEX
Thursday, Sept. 22 - Sunday, Sept. 25
Around 200 cyclists will participate in a four-day long mountain bike adventure at several locations in Colorado Springs, El Paso, and Fremont counties. A $50,000 fund made the event possible from the City's Lodgers and Automobile Rental Tax (LART).
Thursday, Sept. 22
Access parking within Palmer Park and Paseo Road will be closed for 12 hours, beginning at 5 a.m. However, the city states the park will remain open during the event. If dog owners use the park, the city strongly recommends to leash their dogs.
The city states to use the following alternative trails:
- Ute Valley Park
- Pulpit Rock
- High Chaparral Open Space
- Sondermann Park
Sunday, Sept. 25
The Pikes Peak APEX event will start back up at 8 a.m. in America the Beautiful Park. Then, racers will head southwest along Pikes Peak Greenway Trail and Bear Creek Trail. Racers are expected to reach 21st Street at around 8:30 a.m., prompting road closures.
"From the park, riders will cross Bear Creek Road and Gold Camp Road to High Drive and will also use the Daniel’s Pass Trails in Sweetwater Canyon, crossing Cheyenne Canyon Road before climbing back up to Gold Camp Road, Mt. Buckhorn then descending Captain Jack’s Trail. Uphill traffic on Captain Jacks Trail is not allowed between 8 a.m.-12 p.m," the city states.
Spectators should use caution when watching the race.
To avoid the area, non-participants are encouraged to use the following trails: Stratton Open Space, Chamberlain Trail, and Red Rock Canyon Open Space.
Sam Guadagnoli Festival of Life
Saturday, Sept. 24
During the event, Tejon Street between East Kiowa Street and Pikes Peak Ave. will be closed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
