Officials say 1,200-plus acre fire in Baca County contained, but conditions could change that

BACA COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Authorities provided an update on multiple fires burning along highways in Baca County.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Monday, the Baca County Sheriff's Office reported Highway 287 was closed due to multiple fires in the area. By 7:34 p.m., the BCSO announced that the fire was 100% contained. Crews did remain at the scene to work on hotspots.

Crews battled another fire that burned near County Road 39 that sparked later Monday night.

The BCSO said at 11:34 p.m. while active flames had been suppressed, they were battling wind shifts and geographical challenges that caused some flare-ups.

Below is a video that shows the conditions earlier Monday night:

At 3:12 a.m. Tuesday, BCSO said crews were still working on maintaining fire lines. They said a thunderstorm that hit the area brought heavy wind and caused containment and visibility issues.

By 5:31 a.m., the fire was estimated to have covered 1,218 acres.

At this time, the BCSO said the fire is considered contained, but with a fire that large and wind "not exactly favorable" containment could rapidly change.
