New play area underway in downtown Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The City of Colorado Springs announced Monday that construction has started for the new play area in Acacia Park in downtown Colorado Springs.

The play area project will feature new equipment that includes climbing structures, a tot lot, a spinner, and a slide. Also, the city plans to add new landscape and native plants in effort to conserve water in the city.

“Acacia Park has helped entertain visitors in downtown Colorado Springs since our city was founded 150 years ago,” said Mayor John Suthers. “I’m excited to see a new play area in one of our most historic parks, an enhancement that will match the renewed energy of our downtown core and an investment to better serve the increasing number of people who visit it each year.”

The city is expected to open the new play area on Labor Day weekend. However, Uncle Wilber Fountain will be open during construction.

The fountain in the area will feature bright colors and Summer fun just in time for the warmer months.

The area will expand toward the north but built in the same location as the existing playground.

The city says the project costs a total of $900,000. The El Pomar Foundation donated $300,000 and another $600,000 from the 2B voter-approved program.
