Colorado Dept. of Public Health clears up COVID-19 misconceptions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is sharing the reality behind common COVID-19 myths, in hopes that people think twice before making plans over the holiday weekend.

Health experts said a common myth when it comes to testing is that getting a negative test result means you can continue with your normal holiday plans. This actually isn't the case, as a negative test doesn't necessarily mean you're free of Covid.

Experts said there's always a chance of getting tested too early to detect the virus, or contracting the virus between getting tested and going out.

Officials at the state health department said flying is not completely safe either, even if your airline is practicing social distancing.

They said passengers are still close to each other throughout security and at baggage claim, and some of those passengers may be unknowingly traveling with Covid-19.

Dr. Robin Johnson, the medical director of the El Paso County Health Department, also spoke to a common misconception when it comes to the virus and achieving herd immunity through exposure.

"When you look at the risk to achieve herd immunity in that manner, it's pretty high," said Johnson. "The way to achieve herd immunity is going to be greatest through vaccination."

Johnson said younger populations should not celebrate the holidays with people outside of their households either. She said they can still have a severe reaction to the virus even in its aftermath.

Johnson said there have been cases of people suffering from multi-inflammatory syndrome and experiencing cardiovascular issues after having the virus.

If you had Covid-19 earlier in the year, it still is not safe to continue with your normal holiday plans.

Health experts at the county and state said there have been cases of people contracting the virus a second time.
