Neighbors react to evacuation concerns from Wild Horse Fire

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- At roughly 580 acres, the Wild Horse Fire continued to burn just off of Highway 115 through Monday morning into the afternoon. The good news came for nearby residents when all mandatory evacuations in the area were lifted.

“It was very worrisome, but I prayed, my church prayed and God took care of us, he had his hands on us,” said Dee Behrman. Due to the fire, she and her husband were two of the people who had to be evacuated from their home off of Little Turkey Road yesterday.

“We had all of our stuff, all our important papers in our safe and some cash so we just grabbed all of that,” said Behrman.

As for the fire, crews are still hard at work trying to keep the blaze under control. However, the scene Monday looked much better than what we were seeing 24 hours ago.

However, reports now indicate the fire is still at zero percent containment after burning more than 550 acres. Emergency crews say they feel confident about the fire break boxes they have created around the fire.

As the red flag warning continues into today, Capt. Mike Smaldino with the Colorado Springs Fire Department said this is exactly why it’s so important to be aware of your surroundings.

“I think this just drives home the messages that we’ve been trying to get through. We are ready for fires like this. This was a small start but it grew pretty big, pretty quick.”

As Dee settles back into her home, she says she is thankful that as of right now no homes have been lost.

“I’m glad it stayed over on 115 and on Fort Carson where there were no homes. I was praying for all of our neighbors too. Especially down in the valley,” she said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but we will be sure to keep you updated.
