COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs' Labor Day Lift Off is expanding to a citywide celebration.

The 44-year Colorado Springs tradition of a hot air balloon event on Labor Day weekend will continue with the Colorado Springs Labor Day Lift Off on September 5-6 in a heavily modified form amid COVID-19 restrictions.

“The Colorado Springs community will be able to experience early morning balloon launches while balloons fill the city skyline, launching from numerous locations around town,” said Hot Apple Productions Managing Member, Scott Appelman.

Look to the sky - from the comfort of your homes - between 7:00-8:30am Saturday and Sunday morning to watch a spectacular array of 35+ balloons participating in the modified citywide celebration, lifting off from 10-12 locations across the city.

While balloons soar overhead, tune in to your radio to listen to engaging and historical ballooning commentary. Event coverage will be aired on the following radio stations: Sunny 106.3 FM, Y96.9, My 99.9, Cat Country 95.1, 96.1 The Beat, 92.9 Peak FM, 107.9 KBPI South, and AM 740 KVOR.

Several "pop-up" Balloon Glows are planned around the community for Saturday evening at 7:00 pm, weather permitting.

Labor Day Lift Off’s usual donut eating contest, lake events, and field activities will not take place and no vendors will be available. No events will occur at Memorial Park.

However, new this year is a Scavenger Hunt, where viewers can spot and submit photos of as many sponsored balloons. A prize will be awarded to the individual who finds the most sponsored balloon photos (only one photo pers sponsor).

Residents are also encouraged to participate in the action and get their cameras ready to enter the 2020 Labor Day Lift Off Photo Contest.

While last year's event had around 70 hot air balloons, this year will see about 35+ balloons launching from locations throughout Colorado Springs.

The Labor Day Lift Off will be one of the very few balloon events that will take place in the world this year. It will look different not being held at Memorial Park, but available for the community to watch with balloons launching from different locations in Colorado Springs.
