MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The bears have been out and about in Manitou Springs and the Pikes Peak Region for months now, but the city of Manitou Springs is issuing another warning after a bear attack in a residential area.

The attack happened between 10 and 11 p.m. Wednesday near Midland Ave. and Shoshone Place, which is in the hill near the Manitou Springs Elementary School.

According to the city of Manitou Springs, the bear had cubs nearby when it attacked a man's dog while they were walking in the area. The man wasn't injured, but the dog, which is blind, was seriously injured.

Manitou Springs put out a reminder of the importance for wildlife-proof trash bins, which will decrease the likelihood of bears in residential neighborhoods.

Manitou Springs Code Enforcement tells KRDO that the bear was in the neighborhood because of a "problem house" that frequently leaves trash outside unsecured. Code enforcement confirmed that was the case again on Wednesday night, and the homeowner will be fined for not securing their trash.

If you do run into a bear stand still, stay calm and let the bear identify you and leave, Colorado Parks & Wildlife says. Talk in a normal tone of voice, be sure the bear has an escape route and never run or climb a tree. If you see cubs, their mother is usually close by, so you should leave the area immediately.
