PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- It’s been two and a half months since the Pueblo Zoo had to close its doors due to COVID-19 but workers and animals were thrilled to see people again for a limited reopening on Monday.

It's members-only for Monday and Tuesday, but it'll open to the public on Wednesday with some new rules and regulations you will have to follow once entering the zoo.

Abbie Krause, Executive Director said, “Come in with a group of less than 10 and stick with that group as you move through the zoo; secondly, keep your social distance, keep a lion's breath away; thirdly, is the mask.”

And these rules are not just for your protection, but the animals' as well.

“We found that felines, for example, are susceptible and primates, but also, we have a very small staff and we are trying to protect them because they are the ones that care for the animals and if they get sick, we are not able to care for the animals the way we need to,” said Krause.

Speaking of animals, the Pueblo Zoo has some new adorable additions.

Krause said, “We just had a little package delivered, a baby Takin, which is a Himalayan Mountain Goat. He is so -- well, we don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl yet -- but it’s such cuteness. And a lot of people have been following our baby otter; we had five baby otters now, those are not on exhibit quite yet.”

The zoo plans to have no more than 200 people roaming at a time. There will be a red, yellow and green color system online that you can use to judge how busy the zoo is upon going.
