FOUNTAIN, Colo. (KRDO) -- Police say a 5-year-old boy is dead after the crash on Interstate 25 near S. Academy that happened Wednesday evening.

"When it involves those tiny little kids, it's very difficult," said Lisa Schneider, public information officer for the Fountain Police Department.

According to an update from Fountain Police, a pickup truck was turning east onto S. Academy Boulevard from the I-25 southbound off-ramp when it hit an SUV going west on Academy that had ran a red light.

Inside the SUV were a 3-year-old girl, the 5-year-old boy, their mother in the front passenger seat; and her boyfriend behind the wheel. Police say none of them were using seat belts or car seats. As a result, the mother and her two kids were all ejected from the vehicle.

The boy died from his injuries at the scene, and the others in the SUV were taken to the hospital, along with the driver of the pickup truck, according to Fountain police. They haven't been identified yet.

Police say the male drive in the SUV will be facing charges after their investigation is complete. It's believed drugs were a factor in the crash.

"We do have to wait for test results to come back and confirm that but we do suspect the driver was under the influence of some kind of narcotics," Schneider said.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story said the woman was the driver of the SUV.
