After 2 domestic violence murders in Pueblo, petition calls for registry of abusers
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- There's a registry for sex offenders, and now organizers of a petition are calling for a registry of domestic violence abusers in the wake of two suspected murders in Pueblo that police say are linked to domestic violence.
Pueblo police say Nicole Stephenson and Greythonia Jackson were killed at the hands of their significant others this year. Nathan Turner was arrested for Stephenson's death, and Rashad Jackson was arrested for Jackson's death.
If convicted of their murder charges, both of the men will face prison sentences and the effects of a felony.
But a new petition on change.org to Gov. Jared Polis and other local and Congressional legislators is calling for the creation of a Domestic Violence and Abuse registry that would list anyone convicted of a domestic violence crime, specifically those with multiple offenses.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, there are millions of cases of men and women being abused by their partners.
The goal of the registry is to "give validation to survivors and victims, deter the perpetrators and predators ... and prevent future victims of domestic violence and abuse," according to petition organizer Kate Ferguson.
