COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A gas line ruptured near the intersection of San Bruno Place and San Clemente Drive Saturday morning, prompting fire crews to suggest residents who live within a 300 to 400-foot radius to stay inside.

The incident happened when construction crews hit a gas line under the asphalt in a residential neighborhood east of US 115 and south of Quail Lake Park, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

A spokesman with CSFD tells us that the intersection at San Bruno and San Clemente is closed while fire crews manage the scene. Colorado Springs Utilities has been called to the area to take control of the situation, says CSFD.

Fire crews are checking residences in the area for any gas readings, and as of about 11 a.m., no homes have tested positive for those readings. CSFD is asking residents to contact fire crew members if they start to smell gas in their homes. There is a smell of gas in the street, says Capt. Smaldino with CSFD.

Fire crews suggested suggested residents take shelter in their homes until CSU arrives on scene, but it's not a mandatory shelter in place.

As of 5 p.m. the shelter-in-place was lifted, says Smaldino. No gas was detected in any homes.
