6-year-old dead following crash in Otero County

OTERO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado State Patrol is investigating a crash that killed a young boy and injured two other children, all under the age of seven.

The crash happened at 9:09 p.m. as a 2002 Ford Explorer was traveling south on Otero County Road 22 just south of Highway 50.

The vehicle ran off the left side of the road and rolled onto its passenger side, says CSP.

A 6-year-old boy, who was unrestrained, was ejected and pinned under the vehicle, according to CSP.

Two other children in the car -- a 5-year-old boy and a 2-year-old boy-- sustained minor injuries. The 26-year-old driver, identified as Xavier Serros Carrasco of La Junta, sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital, says CSP.

CSP says alcohol and drugs are suspected as factors in this crash. Charges for Serros are pending further investigation, according to CSP.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article stated that the 6-year-old victim was 'not wearing a seat belt.' It has been corrected to more accurately say he was 'unrestrained,' as stated by CSP.
