Man dies in officer-involved shooting that shut down I-70

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. - A fatal officer-involved shooting shut down Interstate 70 in western Colorado for several hours. The shooting was reported at about 2 p.m. Saturday between Canyon Creek and New Castle.

Garfield County Sheriff's Office spokesman Walt Stowe says investigators were awaiting a coroner's report and notification of the victim's family before releasing more information about what led to the shooting.

The highway detour combined with snowy weather and slick roads caused accidents on Highway 6 during the detour, forcing the closure of that route for a period of time. The Colorado Department of Transportation says Interstate 70 reopened in both directions shortly after 8 p.m.
