Summit County firefighter dies while battling fire at Copper Mountain condo
FRISCO, Colo. -- Ken Jones, a 20-year veteran of Summit Fire & EMS, fell to his death early Saturday morning, according to a release from the department.
The 46-year-old firefighter was battling a blaze from the rooftop of a five-story condominium at 860 Copper Road when he fell.
The cause of the fall, as well as the fire, are under investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, according to the release.
This is typical procedure for a firefighter line-of-duty death and no foul play is suspected at this time, says the department.
“He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He was a firefighter’s firefighter,” said Summit Fire & EMS Chief Jeff Berino. “He’s been a valued member of our family for many years.”
Jones leaves behind a wife and two children. His family, as well as the entire Summit Fire & EMS crew, are devastated by his death, the department says.
His death is the first in the department's history.
