DENVER (AP) - A rock slide has closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 70, creating delays for people heading from the Denver area to Colorado ski areas.

Colorado Department of Transportation officials said Friday that westbound vehicles between Beaver Brook and Dumont are being turned back, and that the closure and delays may be extensive.

Officials say an alternative route to Summit County is U.S. Highway 285 to Colorado State Highway 9, but that also is likely to experience delays.

Parts of eastbound I-70 may also be closed later Friday for rockfall mitigation work.
