Teller county food pantry adjusts hours for winter storm
TELLER COUNTY, Colo. -- In anticipation of a winter storm, the Community Cupboard will be closed Tuesday, two days before Thanksgiving.
The pantry's executive director, Lisa Rawson says she decided to extend hours on Monday and Wednesday in light of the closure.
"Since they're anticipating such a large storm I wanted to make sure those in need get the food boxes they need to," said Rawson.
The days leading up to the holiday are some of their busiest. In addition to preparing food boxes that last a family 7 to 10 days, they also make Thanksgiving boxes, including dinner staples like turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing.
Closing on one of their busiest days wasn't an easy decision. Rawson says she's "very concerned about that."
"I thought about staying just to make sure I was here tomorrow if they need me to be," she said.
Rawson says they were expecting to feed 40 to 50 families on Monday, but that number nearly doubled within a few hours of opening.
By lunchtime, the pantry had given out about 3,000 pounds of food.
On Wednesday, the pantry is expecting to re-open at 9:30am.
