One person shot and killed near protests in Denver

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) — One person is dead after a shooting in downtown Denver Saturday afternoon. It happened as two groups of protesters winded down demonstrations at Civic Center Park.

Police tweeted they were investigating a shooting near the Denver Art Museum at 3:49 p.m. Police said one person was taken to the hospital.

An hour later, another tweet said the shooting is now being investigated as a homicide. Police said they took two suspects into custody.

KUSA reported one of its employees, a 9NEWS producer, and a hired private security guard were the two people who police arrested. Police later said the producer was not involved in the shooting and has been released.

The security guard is the suspect who is detained by police. KUSA said it has been the station's policy to hire security to accompany staff at protests over the last few months.

People participating in a "Patriot Rally" planned to meet earlier Saturday at several locations around the Denver metro area and drive to the park next to the state Capitol, according to our news partners KUSA.

A group of counter-protesters planned an event, "BLM-Antifa Soup Drive," at the same time in Civic Center Park.
