The School Buzz: Manitou Springs HS students get real-world experience with parking lot home build

Students at Manitou Springs High School continue to build a home while, at the same time, possibly building their future careers.

Students started a home build in the high school parking lot in October of last year. The build is a partnership between Manitou Springs Schools and Careers in Construction Colorado, a nonprofit in the Homebuilder’s Association. It's all funded by industry partners who donate materials, time, and mentorship.

Brad Borkowski is the Industrial Tech teacher. He loves it.

“There are so many different career paths for them from this. And so this is just a great opportunity to expose them to framing, to electrical, to plumbing, to all that," said Borkowski.

Once the home is done, hopefully by May, roughly 150 students will have helped with the build. CICC will then sell the home.

A new home build project will start at Manitou Springs High School next fall.
