The School Buzz: Manitou students team up for science camp in Deckers

Fifth graders out of the Manitou School District went to science camp earlier this month. It was the first time in several years fifth graders from Manitou Springs Elementary and Ute Pass Elementary participated in the camp together.

88 students went up to the YMCA’s Camp Shady Brook in Deckers. There was archery, canoeing, climbing, plant ecology, and geology – they even learned survival skills. It was an outdoor excursion the kids will never forget, and one that promotes bonding before the students enter junior high together next year.

“They’re making new friends, and eventually they’re going to be together at the middle school,” said Rachel Kazmier, 5th Grade Teacher at Manitou Springs Elementary School. “That really helps form that bond together and a familiar face when they get up there next year.”
