The School Buzz: Palmer Ridge senior wins top Girl Scout award for ‘bee hotel’ project

A Girl Scout from Monument is creating a lot of buzz for helping out local bees.

Megan King is a Palmer Ridge senior. As part of her Girl Scout project, she installed nesting sites (bee hotels) for local and native bees in Monument using native plants and flowers to attract the bees. One is near Dirty Woman Creek Park and another is at Prairie Winds Elementary School.

Why are such "hotels" important? 90 percent of native bees are solitary; they don’t live in hives or make honey. But solitary bees are incredibly important as well because they are vital pollinators.

Megan earned the Girl Scout Gold Award because of her project, the highest award a Scout can earn.

Megan said it’s the largest project she’s ever done, adding “It was a great opportunity for me to learn about my strengths and weaknesses and figure out what methods for keeping myself organized and on-track work best for me."

"I’m very happy to be able to help the bees and other pollinators in my community through this project, especially with the issues that bees are having as of late (with such things as colony collapse disorder)," she said.
