The School Buzz: Harrison HS valedictorian pushes for mental health awareness while mentoring for LGBTQ minorities

Gisselle Zamora is this year's valedictorian for Harrison High School's 2021 graduating class. But her 4.265 GPA accompanying her number one class rank is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Gisselle's promising resume.

Over the last few years, Gisselle has been a cross country runner, volunteer and mentor, all while gaining multiple impressive scholarships that have helped her earn an opportunity to enroll into New York University this fall. She's also been a leader at her school while advocating for minorities.

A proud daughter of an immigrant family, Gisselle said that she and her mother have experienced doctors undermining their mental health concerns. So she's connected with Aspen Pointe and other mental health facilities to learn how to make the industry more affordable because she wants to start her own mental health business that serves underprivileged communities.

On top of volunteering in order to learn how to better implement her future business plans, Giselle has also formed a Dreamer’s and Pride Club which aims to educate the community. She even hosted a Stepping Out of the Shadows event that provided a platform for immigrant and LGBTQ communities to share their stories.

A spokesperson with the Harrison School District told KRDO, "Gisselle's dedication to her studies and her commitment to her community, along with the support of her Harrison High School mentor as well as Peak Education, has earned her the prestigious Gates Scholarship and Greenhouse Scholarship!"
