The School Buzz: Discovery Canyon HS jazz ensemble returns for first time since pandemic

Schools are still facing challenges because of Covid. But Discovery Canyon High School in Colorado Springs is very jazzed about their latest step towards "normal."

The Discovery Canyon High Jazz Ensemble recently had their first performance since February 21, 2020. And they didn’t sound rusty at all, in part, playing “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder – an incredibly difficult song to play.

Justin Carpenter is the band director who wanted to point out Nicholas Hall on Trumpet: Nick made All-State Jazz, All-State Band and All-State Orchestra – a trifecta that's nearly unheard of. Sean Kirkpatrick is part of the ensemble and a composer who’s also been recognized for his work while still in high school.

The jazz ensemble originally didn’t have another performance planned for the year. However, that's recently changed. Two senior drummers missed this recent high school show because of a Covid quarantine, including Sam Tunnah – which was heartbreaking because Sam’s mother is terminally ill. Some calls were made. And now the Discovery Canyon Jazz Ensemble will have another show, May 21 at IvyWild in the Springs at 7 PM, ensuring Sam will get to play for his mom again.
