House fire investigation underway in Security-Widefield area

An investigation is underway into a house fire in the Security-Widefield area.

Fire crews were called to a home on Silverdale St. just after 2 a.m. Thursday. Investigators say the fire began in a 17-year-old boy's room. That boy was initially reported unaccounted for, but it was later determined he left the home before the fire broke out. El Paso County Sheriff's deputies found him hours later, only miles away from his home.

Scene safety was an issue due to the cold weather. One firefighter suffered minor injuries when they fell, but they were treated at the scene. Plows were called in to treat the roads in the neighborhood.

The house has been declared uninhabitable, and the Red Cross will assist the five people who were displaced by the fire.

Fire officials want to remind people that if you're using extra heating sources, to ensure they're not flammable, and are well contained.

At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.
