Library program in Colorado Springs aims to improve kindergarten readiness

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pikes Peak Library District has teamed up with LENA Start to help improve school readiness by encouraging parents to talk more with their children.

The 10-week program is for parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers (0-33 months). Parents are given a "talk pedometer" to measure how much they're talking with their children and how much their children are responding.

"We’re trying to empower our parents and to say, 'Hey this talk is like your secret sauce, if you do this with your baby they are going to so ready for pre-school and kindergarten,'" said Milissa Fellers, the early literacy senior librarian at Penrose Library.

A new session begins on Tuesday, June 15th from 2-3 p.m. Classes will also be offered Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. starting on June 17th. These classes will be held virtually and registration is required.
