Lot owner argues proposed dump in SE Colorado Springs is a benefit as neighbors push back

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The man behind the effort to put a trash transfer station in Southeast Colorado Springs argues that it would bring benefits to the neighborhood, despite a neighbor-led petition that alleges it would decrease property value in the area.

David Deighton is the Operating Manager of Citywide LLC, the company that purchased the lot to move a trash transfer station into the neighborhood. He believes this new station will cut down on illegal dumping in the area, and add convenience for anyone trying to dump their trash. He said the area is growing rapidly and doesn't have enough transfer stations, so this will help support that growth.

Deighton said the trash coming to this transfer station will only be there for a matter of hours before it's moved out, and will largely be construction trash. One of the main concerns listed in the petition is that this transfer station will have a smell. Deighton maintains that, even though the site will be open to the public, the trash will not have a smell like neighbors are concerned about.

"When you go and you see a plot of land, and they're building up a bunch of homes, every home has a dumpster. Well, nobody's complaining about the smell out of it, because they don't seem to mind the smell of drywall, and cardboard and two by fours and all that stuff being cut up and put in a dumpster," Deighton said.

It is still early in the process, no application has been filed with the city yet. Although, when asked if he believes this is a done deal, Deighton replied, "I believe it is."
