Centennial accident

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Colorado Springs Police said a bicyclist has died after he was hit by a car Sunday afternoon. The crash happened on Centennial Boulevard near Garden of the Gods Road. in northwest Colorado Springs.

Investigators said Richard Timberlake, 74, was traveling southbound on Centennial Blvd. when he swerved out of the bike lane across multiple lanes of traffic and was hit by a southbound black Subaru.

Several people saw the crash happen.

"I yelled to him 'hang in there, the ambulance is on the way,'" Paul Sidney told KRDO. "That's pretty much all you can do to a person that's injured critically like that."

Police said Timberlake was taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries. He later died in the hospital.

"The driver was absolutely devastated. She was in shock," Sydney added.

Neither excessive speeds nor impairment are suspected factors in the crash, according to police. Police haven't filed any charges, and the Major Crash Team is investigating.
