Some Colorado DMVs reopen for appointments only
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles announced Friday it has taken appropriate precautions and is ready to safely serve more Coloradans.
KRDO crews talked to DMV officials on state and local levels, to see what in-person services they're providing and what precautions they're taking.
Who should visit the DMV right now?
Anyone considered vulnerable to COVID-19 should stay cautious about going anywhere, including the DMV. You're advised to look online or call first, to see if the service you need is available remotely.
What safety precautions are being taken at the DMV?
Everyone inside is asked to wear a mask, and there are markings on the ground to enforce social distancing.
"We want to keep that more than six-foot spacing, we don't want lines wrapped around the building," said county Clerk and Recorder, Chuck Boerman. "We have staff that goes through after a customer leaves our counter and wipes the plexiglass and the workstation down."
When will license offices in Southern Colorado be open?
As of Monday, license offices in Canon City and Salida are open to anyone by appointment only.
Offices in Colorado Springs and Pueblo are open for commercial drivers only this week. They'll reopen for regular drivers starting next week, but still won't be conducting driving tests until further notice.
Are there any grace periods available due to COVID-19 closures?
Officials tell us if you've been granted a registration extension, that's good until the end of June. You can apply on the state website.
To help fit in more appointments while allowing for social distancing, the Colorado Springs DMV is adding Saturday hours to its Powers and Airport offices, in addition to its Union and Research offices.
