Early Tuesday morning CSFD responded to a two alarm fire at the Kitty Hawk Apartments located on Arcadia Street. The fire which is believed to have started in the laundry room saw flames shooting out the side of the building.

Joel Williams who lives in the building said, “We heard a loud clunking sound coming from our heating system. We think it was the furnace or something because we heard that large clunking sound and then we wake up and look around and there is just a smell of smoke in the air.”

The fire started around 6:40 am. Williams says it was a pretty scary experience but is happy knowing that him and his family got out safely.

"We come out and see that it’s coming out of next door and the laundry room. So we came out and called 911. The fire trucks started getting here and everyone got out of the building real quick,” said Williams.

Crews had to chase the fire through the walls. Eventually, They were able to locate the fire in the wall which lead to the large flames.

Captain Michael Smaldino with CSFD said, “They know that there was still some hidden fire in the building and when they opened it up and the fire came out that’s what they were really searching for. So now, they are still inside pulling the ceilings and the walls to make sure there is no more hidden fire in there.”

Capt. Smaldino said it is still unknown on how many people will be displaced.

“This is a 26 unit apartment and the building manager says they have about 35 people here so as of right now they have about 35 people who are out. Like I said I know there is two units that are going to be displaced just due to fire and we got smoke in the other one so not sure how many people are going to be out.”

Two people were treated on scene but luckily, no one was seriously injured.
