Pueblo gets blasted by Sunday night’s snowstorm
PUEBLO, Co. (KRDO) - Pueblo and other areas south of Colorado Springs are expected to get hit the worst by Sunday night’s snow storm.
Of course, Pueblo doesn’t always get the big blast, so KRDO crews talked to locals to see if they’re prepared.
Claude Hayward has been driving massive trucks around Pueblo for more than 20 years.
He says the snow only creates a problem for him when other drivers don’t take it seriously.
“I worry more about a lot of the people in their cars. Because they don’t seem to slow down. They just keep acting like it’s dry weather,” he said. For that reason, he drives with extra caution during storms. “I keep a safe following distance,” Hayward continued.
Being further south, Pueblo doesn’t see as much of the fluffy white stuff.
“It’s a hit or miss,” said Pueblo resident, Lucy Steele.
Even in December, we found that some Pueblo driver’s aren’t fully prepared for it.
“How about a blanket if you were to get stuck?” we asked. “No, I don't. My husband tells me to make sure we have blankets and stuff and I haven't listened to him. He's right on that part,” Steele replied.
Safety officials agree with Steele’s husband.
They say a blanket, a hat, gloves/mittens, and some good snow boots are a must -- because you never know when you might be forced from your comfy car, and into those potentially life-threatening weather conditions.
Even better: if you don’t have to be out there on the roads, relax indoors.
“Just heading home and trying to stay warm, and have some hot chocolate with my hubby,” Steele said.
The snow isn’t expected to stop until 5:00 a.m. Monday, with an expected 2 to 4 inches of accumulation.
Even then, the roads will be slick and crews will have to clean up the mess, so it’s best to leave some extra time for your morning commute.
