Friends start GoFundMe after Colorado Springs man was shot trying to stop armed robbery

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Jason Wood confronted the suspect who just crashed into Altitude Organics Medicine in Colorado Springs last month when he was shot four times.

Now, Woods friends have started a GoFundMe to help him pay for his medical bills after he was seriously injured trying to stop the armed robbery near his home on April 15, 2021.

Colorado Springs Police confirm that Wood tried to confront a suspect who had crashed a car into Altitude Organics Medicine on North Academy and was attempting to steal from the dispensary. The suspect started shooting at Wood and fled the scene.

Robbin Gregory, a close friend of Wood, said he was shot four times and has undergone five surgeries. He's suffering from a collapsed lung, a pierced liver, a shattered femur, and a skull injury. Gregory said he will have a long recovery process ahead of him and is also suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Gregory also said that Wood is self-employed and does not have insurance. She started a GoFundMe to help raise funds to cover his medical expenses. She said he's a painter by trade and will not be able to work for months as he works to recover. She said he's a very selfless person and was reluctant to ask for help.

"He's just a very giving soul and he is a service to his community," Gregory said. "He's just that type of person that will draw you in and just want to be your friend."

Gregory met Wood because she hired him to paint her house two years ago. She was so happy with his work that she recommended him to all her neighbors and eventually, she said he became just like family. She added that he's a single dad to a 3-year-old girl and an active member of his church. She hopes that the Colorado Springs community will help get him back on his feet.

CSPD said the suspect involved is now in custody after weeks of investigating and will face charges of Attempted Murder for shooting at Wood.
