Woman arrested after allegedly starting fire at her workplace in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A woman has been arrested after allegedly starting a fire in a building she worked in.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), a fire alarm went off around 3:30 p.m. in the 00 block of North Tejon Street. A caller also reported a structure fire at the same location. CSPD says the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded and put the fire out.

According to arrest records, the incident occurred at 31 North Tejon Street, in the office space above The Famous Steak House.

According to arrest records, a fire department investigator noticed someone acting suspiciously and, when asked what had happened, the person, later identified as the suspect, began walking away slowly. Arrest records say the investigator then saw video of the suspect lighting a roll of wrapping paper on fire.

Arrest records say the investigator determined, based on where the wrapping paper was, the fire must have started there on the fifth floor. They also noted an incense was lit in the suspect's office space upon their arrival.

According to arrest records, video surveillance showed Kristy walking back and forth on the fifth floor before walking into a nearby room and grabbing wrapping paper. The records say the rolls of paper were brought further down the hallway and when the suspect came back on camera, the fire alarm was going off.

CSPD says that when the suspect was searched, they found a piece of wrapping paper that matched the type that had been set on fire. Arrest records also say the suspect was the only person in that section of the building at the time.

39-year-old Kristy Hart was booked into the Criminal Justice Center and faces charges of first-degree arson and criminal mischief, according to CSPD.

According to booking details from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, Hart is being held on a $25,000 bond.

Arrest records say the damage was estimated around $500 or more.

The Famous Steak House and other businesses in the building are operating as normal.
