El Paso County deputy placed on leave after DUI, weapons charges

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- An El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputy has been placed on administrative leave after being charged in connection with an alleged DUI crash.

According to the sheriff's office, 41-year-old David Smith was contacted by the Colorado Springs Police Department while off duty on July 21.

Police charged Smith with:

  • Driving under the influence
  • Careless driving
  • Accident driving under the influence
  • Prohibited use of weapons

The sheriff's office said Smith has worked for the agency since September 2024 and is assigned to the Detention Security Division.

Following the charges, Smith was placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
