A Doherty basketball player receives an assist from area teams
Schafer Reichart, is junior guard for Doherty and is one of the Spartans top players but a year ago, he was fighting for his life. He was in the hospital for a month and half battling toxic shock syndrome, "It just seemed unreal. It didn't seem right because just a month ago he seemed healthy and he was playing basketball," says Reichart's friend and Rampart basketball player Cole Bowen, "It was really scary. I just put my faith in the lord and trusted him that he would provide for me and he did," says Reichart.
Schafer made a remarkable recovery and it makes sense when you find out that he was never alone. Rampart high school played Doherty last season right after Schafer in club ball, so they decided to do something. The school held a fundraiser. The players made shirts and traded them with Schafer's teammates before the game, "It feels really good because we're doing it for someone we love and care for," says Reichart's friend Koby Young. After that, schools from across the city found ways to show support. A domino-effect of kindness. These days Schafer is back starting for Doherty, now alongside his brother Andrew, "He's out there killing it. Just keeping doing what he's doing. It was really good to see him out there. I know for all of us, as a team, being able to play against him again, and to just see him on the court, it was a great feeling for everyone," Schafer's friend Cale Cormaney. S "I don't know. I just couldn't thank them more and couldn't express my thankfulness to them. They're amazing," says Reichart.
