CSP continues to investigate a triple fatal on Marksheffel Road

Just after 3 p.m. Sunday, law enforcement agencies responded to the intersection of Marksheffel and Space Village avenue for a reported 3 vehicle collision.

Sgt. Jason jones with CSP said, “This was an extremely violent collision at high speeds and it would’ve been very difficult for anyone to survive.”

Sgt. Jones would continue to tell us that a 2017 Honda CRV was Westbound on Space Village avenue when the driver, a 75-year-old female, failed to stop at a stop sign.

“Upon entering the intersection, it was broadsided by a Ford F-150 that was traveling Northbound on Marksheffel Road. Both of those vehicles then traveled into the Southbound Lanes of Marksheffel Road where they were both struck by a gray Jeep Cherokee,” said Sgt. Jones.

And when it comes to running the stop sign at this intersection it seems to happen more often than not. Earlier this morning we saw multiple drivers blow through it, including one we caught on camera.

Sgt. Travis Kitowski with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said, “A lot of times people just disregard their traffic safety and unfortunately fatalities happen because of it.”

As Colorado Springs grows, Marksheffel Road continues to see more and more traffic every day. Sgt. Kitowski says it’s becoming a major problem spot.

“With rural highways like that and the speed limit is higher, people tend to seed anyways but with a posted speed limit with an average of 65 mph you are probably seeing people that are 15-20 mph over the speed limit.”

And ultimately, a lot of these accidents are avoidable. Sgt. Jones said if people were paying attention, three people would not have lost their lives yesterday, “We just need people to pay attention to the road, put down their phones. If you are having a conversation with people in the vehicle and not to speculate, the point is we need people to pay attention to what they are doing.”
