Absolutely Colorado: Over 1,000 flags placed in downtown Colorado Springs ahead of Veterans Day parade

COLORADO SPRINGS. Colo. (KRDO) -- Downtown Colorado Springs is covered in American flags in preparation for Veterans Day to honor those in service and those who sacrificed their lives.

More than 1,000 flags are being planted in the medians of streets that the Veterans Day parade will go through on November 7. Volunteer Space Force Guardians from the Peterson Space Force Base came out to place flags and dedicate them to honor members in service.

For Space Force member Nicholas Johnson it was more than just putting down flags for the upcoming holiday. He has family that has served in all branches of the military.

"Remembering those that have served. Behind every service member is an actual person and knowing that everyone has sacrificed something for this great nation," Johnson said.

Space Force member Jalin Morris felt there was one main purpose why volunteers like himself were out there today.

"Hoping that this can kind of spread awareness, kind of encourage people to get out there to do something for the community. Get out there and just be themselves with other people," Morris said.

The service itself is to honor the many individuals in the Pikes Peak region who had served or are currently serving.

The 1,111 placed in the medians mark the route of the upcoming Veterans Day parade Nov. 7th and will be there until Veterans Day the following Wednesday.

Each flag can be adopted for $25. All the proceeds will support the Veterans Day Parade, and adopted flags will include the person's name, branch and service.
