CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) says it is investigating a reported bear attack in Clear Creek County early Thursday morning.

According to CPW, a homeowner on Castlewood Drive told CPW around 1 a.m. that he heard noises on the deck and found a bear outside near the trash cans. The man says he tried to scare the bear away by yelling but it ran towards him.

CWP says the man then pushed the bear away, and it retreated and charged at him again. The man says he then kicked the bear in self-defense and it ran away from the property. CPW says the man then sought medical treatment.

According to officials, CPW searched the area for the bear but couldn't find it. CPW says its officers will continue to look for bear activity, but are asking residents to remove any trash or other attractants it may have.

They are reminding residents to stay "BearWise" to make sure Colorado's bears are being protected during the year.

This is the 12th bear attack reported to CPW this year, according to officials.
