Pikes Peak Library District offering extended hours in makerspaces and studios

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) says it is expanding its makerspace and studio hours, which will include times when staff isn't present.

PPLD says the East Library was the first to expand its hours, but two more libraries, Library 21c and Sand Creek Library, are following suit soon. They also say the two studios at the libraries will have extended hours.

"Patrons have been asking for more time in the makerspaces and studios, PPLD director of strategy and innovation Becca Cruz said in a press release. "We have found a way to meet the demand within our budget. We're excited to offer this new concept to our patrons."

Those interested in using the machines at the makerspace or studios can train and become certified. PPLD says that once people are certified, they can make reservations during the library's operating hours without staff availability.

PPLD says that to be eligible for those unstaffed hours, people have to have a library card in good standing for 90 days, complete the required certification classes and reserve time.

The PPLD website says the East Library's makerspace started offering extended hours in September.

More information on how to be certified is available on PPLD's website.
