Water main break floods Colorado Springs neighborhood, leaves one homeowner facing another cleanup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Colorado Springs woman says she's facing another major cleanup after a water main break flooded her property for the sixth time in 31 years.

Michelle Gallegos told KRDO13 the flooding near South Murray Boulevard and Shelley Avenue was the worst she's seen. The water poured into her yard, causing significant damage just two days after repairs from a previous break were completed.

A water main break at the same intersection in May left Gallegos cleaning up for months. Now, she says she has to start over.

"I've been here for 31 years. This house is paid off. It's mine. But if I lose this house, then I have nothing. And I was this close to losing it today," Gallegos said.

"The water was a lot higher this time, and there was more of it than last time. It's like each time it breaks, they do more and more damage," she said.

A KRDO13 crew was on scene at the water main break in southeastern Colorado Springs. Crews witnessed water flooding down Murray Boulevard toward Shelley Avenue and surrounding neighborhood streets.

Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) said the following in a press release:

"Colorado Springs Utilities is responding to the water main break in the area of Murray Boulevard. Both northbound and southbound lanes of Murray Boulevard are closed between Airport Road and Dewey Road while crews investigate and make repairs.

The roadway is expected to remain closed through Monday as repairs and assessments continue.

Drivers are asked to use caution, avoid the area if possible, and follow all posted traffic control signs and detours to help ensure the safety of crews working on site."

A CSU spokesperson told KRDO13 if customers experience property damage related to water main breaks, CSU will work directly with them and provide information on the claims process.
