Sand Creek parent wants accountability a week after alleged racism from Lutheran High School at football game

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The mother of a Sand Creek High School cheerleader who was there for the game against Lutheran High School that sparked a series of racism allegations is speaking out.

A week ago today, parents and students at Sand Creek first spoke to KRDO13, raising concerns about alleged racism by members of the Lutheran High School community. They say they were subject to racist taunts during their game in September.

Sarita Lewis, the mother of a Sand Creek High School cheerleader, says she wasn't there for her daughter when the game happened, but heard about it afterward and is now calling for accountability.

"As a parent, you can't be there to protect your children," Lewis said. "It's an away game, I wasn't there."

Lewis says she understands why Air Academy High School has now forfeited its Homecoming game against Lutheran on Friday.

"At this age, they're going through enough pressure," Lewis said. "This is the last thing that they need. So I think that it was a very smart safeguard that these coaches did to protect their students."

Lewis says her daughter has been experiencing a lot of emotional trauma during this time.

"We come from an interracial, multicultural family," Lewis said. "Action needs to be taken. The fact that we have our school, the school after us adn now another school that's wanting to forfeit because they don't want their students impacted. That speaks for itself."
