DUI suspect arrested after allegedly reaching for firearm during traffic stop in Cimarron Hills

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A 23-year-old man was arrested after allegedly being found unconscious in a stopped vehicle on Highway 24, where he was later accused of reaching for a firearm.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) says deputies located the vehicle around 9 p.m. on Sept. 29 in the Cimarron Hills area.

The driver, who was later identified as Jose Tello, allegedly appeared unconscious but breathing, with an open alcohol container in plain view, according to EPSO. Deputies say the vehicle had front-end damage and a flat tire on the driver's side.

EPSO says medical assistance was requested.

According to law enforcement, Tello began to wake up and allegedly reached for a gun that was in his pocket. EPSO says he was ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint and detained.

He was charged with the following, EPSO confirms:

  • Possession of a weapon by a previous offender
  • Driving under the influence
  • Prohibited use of a firearm

Law enforcement says Tello has since been released on a $2,000 bond.
